Planting plan - March 2025
Key Considerations
- Full Sun: Beds A, B, C, D, F, G, H (except left 30cm of F-G-H, which get morning shade).
- Partial Shade in Summer: Bed E (shaded by a maple tree but will receive more light in autumn).
- Soil Depth:
- AâE: Good soil (20-30cm deep) â Suitable for deep-rooted crops.
- FâH: Shallow soil (8-12cm deep) â Best for shallow-rooted crops or raised bed additions.
Planting Plan
| Bed | Current Plants | New Suggested Crops | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| A (Full Sun, Deep Soil) | Empty | đą Lettuce, spinach, silverbeet, radish + Marigolds & Alyssum (pollinators) | - Fast-growing greens for autumn harvest. - Succession plant every 2 weeks to extend harvest. - Marigolds deter aphids & nematodes, alyssum attracts bees. |
| B (Full Sun, Deep Soil) | Mature Basil, Almost-Harvested Beetroot | 𼌠After beetroot, plant broccoli & kale + Chamomile & Borage | - Brassicas will shade basil and prevent bolting. - Mulch heavily to keep soil cool. - Chamomile improves flavor of brassicas, borage attracts bees. |
| C (Full Sun, Deep Soil, Narrow Strip) | Empty | đ§ Garlic & Leeks + Thyme | - Perfect for overwintering crops. - Plant now to harvest in late winter/spring. - Thyme deters cabbage moths & improves soil health. |
| D (Full Sun, Deep Soil, Tomatoes Still Producing) | Mature Tomatoes | đ Let tomatoes finish producing â Then plant onions, leeks, and parsley + Basil & Nasturtiums | - Tomatoes will last until early autumn. - Replace with hardy winter crops once done. - Basil improves tomato growth, nasturtiums deter pests. |
| E (Partial Shade in Summer, Full Sun in Winter, Deep Soil) | Lettuce (L) | đą More lettuce & coriander + Calendula | - Shade helps prevent bolting. - Coriander thrives in cooler weather. - Calendula attracts pollinators & repels pests. |
| F (Full Sun, Left Side Morning Shade, Shallow Soil) | Empty | đż Chives, spring onions, parsley + Dill | - Shallow-rooted crops that grow well in limited soil. - Dill attracts beneficial insects & improves flavor of onions. |
| G (Full Sun, Left Side Morning Shade, Shallow Soil) | Broad Beans (BB) | đŤ Let broad beans grow + Phacelia | - Great choice! They fix nitrogen into the soil. - Phacelia attracts bees & improves soil structure. |
| H (Full Sun, Left Side Morning Shade, Shallow Soil) | Tomatoes (T) | đ Let tomatoes finish producing â Then plant mustard greens or pak choi + Nasturtiums | - Mustard greens & pak choi grow fast before winter sets in. - Nasturtiums act as a trap crop for pests, protecting other plants. |
